What can sometimes get lost in the weeds around healing from substance use disorder is that we are recovering from an addiction, not from a substance. This is why there’s so much more to it than just not picking up. At just shy of two full years of recovery, I have no interest in reaching for alcohol anymore. But the mechanics of that—that reflex I spent two decades carving into my reactions to things I couldn’t quite get a handle on—are only part of one system within many that I have to learn to break apart.
